Carmel-by-the-Sea: Cottages and Stealth
A
Geocaching Tour of Carmel-by-the-Sea
This
series is designed to offer a variety of geocaching challenges
ranging from level one to level three. Some of the caches will be a
quick and easy grab. The rest are located in a busy urban area and
may require stealth techniques, a high level of patience, advance
planning, or return visits.
Drive (or walk) down the sleepy residential streets of
Carmel-by-the-Sea and you will find an idyllic fairyland scene of
twisted oaks surrounding charming cottages and homes.
Many
of the original Bohemian artist and vacation cottages have been
carefully remodeled to retain the original Comstock architectural
design elements. Although they are now substantially larger than
the original cottages, they all share the element of creative
design on a very small lot.
The
original 700-800 square foot quintessential Carmel cottages are
still out there, (charming as ever) and if you look carefully among
the bigger houses you'll see them tucked into the nooks and
crannies of each street. Many still have single pane windows, half
doors, stone walks and patios, tidy little gardens, and some sort
of low fence with a latch gate.
You'll also find your sign only cache tucked away out
there in cottage land. Sized between micro and small, it is well
camoed but hidden right on the edge of the street (you do not need
to venture down the doggie paths into the foliage).
If
your GPS is trying to send you off the street deep into the
foliage, walk around the corner and reapproach from a different
angle. This worked well for us, we zeroed out 1-2 feet from the
cache after previously experiencing poor reception. Watch out for
muggles, and enjoy your cottage tour!
Update
11/4/07: Funny how a cache that seemed like it might be one of the
easiest would turn out to be one of the hardest...options up the
star rating or add a hint. It is hard to justify a higher rating,
so I've added a hint. This should do the trick.
