Geocache Description:

Part of a history tour of Wetumpka Alabama using the alphabet as your guide.

Wetumpka History Alphabets – “W”

Welcome to Wetumpka. The name Wetumpka is a derivative of a Creek Indian word meaning “Waters that Rumble”, or “Rumbling Waters”. We-Wau (water) and Tum-Cau (rumbling) was a phrase used by them to describe a prominent place in the river where water rumbled over the rocks. The Coosa River makes its trek north to south coming from Lake Jordon which is located a short drive north of Wetumpka. Along the way, it passes through and over many sets of natural rapids that play host to many White Water Events throughout the year.

You are currently at the Wetumpka Welcome Center. The property once belonged to the State of Alabama where a Rest Area was located. The rest areas along the US Highways were a welcomed sight to weary travelers before the Interstate System was in place. Once the Interstate System was built, the US Highways saw less and less traffic. Eventually the State shut down the rest area located here and the land was purchased by the City of Wetumpka to serve as a Welcome and Information center to visitors and residents alike. A Golden George awaits the FTF.

While in the area, don’t forget to grab BlueLews “Alabama Desoto Trail”. GCHANP
