Geocache Description:

Joes Mountain is a natural bushland area encircled by creeks, on the edge of Hornsby suburbia.

It is known for its stands of Blue Gum forest and variety of wildlife. We have seen wallabies, echidnas, possums, red belly black snakes, brown snakes, pythons, brush turkeys, lyre birds and a powerful owl in the area.

It is thought that Joes Mountain is named after Joe Higgins - a member of the timber-cutting Higgins family who settled in Old Mans Valley in 1825.

To get to the cache, start from the fire trail at the end of Rosemead Rd. The shortest route is not the easiest (unless you are a rock climber!). It is best to follow the fire trail for a few minutes. When it swings left (west) you will see a clearing with a faint trail heading up the mountain. It involves a bit of scrambling but once you are on top of the mountain, the walking is easier.

Once you have got the cache you could also continue along the fire trail to get the caches "Choice Water Views", "Rock Hopper", "The Washing Machine" (if it has not been washed away) and "The Deadly Tree". This pleasant half day circuit walk follows the Blue Gum track to come out at Ginger Meggs Park on Valley Rd.

Have fun!
