Catalina - What is this place? Traditional Cache

Should be easy find for most geocachers.
Surprisingly, there are not many caches located at this heavily visited location. We were looking around the Avalon area for a good spot for a cache, and came upon this very odd area. As you will see when you arrive, it appears that there is or was some sort of amphitheater here, as there are levels of stone walls stacked one after the other, surrounding a central area with concrete steps and other paths. At the time we placed the cache, we found deer grazing the steps nearby - very unusual considering the buildings all around and so close to civilization.
The cache is an easy walk from the main drag of Avalon, so most visitors should be able to get to it without the need for long hikes, or cart rentals, and will bring you to this unusual area that most visitors probably rarely see.
Can anyone explain what this place is???
