Geocache Description:

Easy paddle to jumping off point or nasty hike from Appalacian Trail.

This cache is located in the James River Face Wilderness Area of Thomas Jefferson National Forest. The land route is almost due north of Matts Creek shelter on the Appalacian Trail. The land route is not recommended but if you're tough, try it.

The recommended route is to canoe or kayak upstream approximately one mile from the Cashaw Creek (aka Cushaw) boat ramp in Snowden. The jumping off point for the climb is near the end of the first forested island.

I made the climb in tennis shoes and shorts but this is a hand over hand climb approximately 100' above the river. The cache is located on a rock that juts out from the rest near a currently standing dead tree. The original rubbermaid box has been replaced with an ammo can in Dec. of 2009. Thanks to those who replaced it. Don't get hurt!
