This journey take you to Stoney Lonesome near Norfolk.
Stoney Lonesome was a part of the now defunct Central New England
Railway. The CNE operated untill 1927. The rails are long gone but
remnants of this past era still remain.
On March 8, 1882, Bloomfield Engine CW 7 hit a five-ton boulder at
Stoney Lonesome and jumped the track. It took ten days to re-rail
the engine. The attached photo shows the pin used to haul the
engine back up the mountain to the track. If you locate the pin,
please list the coordinates in your log. Engine CW 7 ran until it
was condemned on March 9, 1899.
From the parking area on Ashpohtag Road, follow the hiking trail.
Please respect area property owners and adhere to posted NO
TRESSPASSING signs. This is a great hike for the entire family. As
always, enjoy the adventure!
