Geocache Description:

SDSQ = South Dakota Spirit Quest. It is a heading used on many caches in other states that deal with Cemetaries. These caches are placed with due respect and are not in contact with or in close proximity to any of the markers. Please hunt with the reverence these hallowed grounds deserve. Please show respect when visiting. Please use stealth when finding the final stage of this cache. I hope to make this the first of many Custer's 1874 Black Hills Expedition Caches.

August 14, 1874 Custers 7th Calvary came through this very valley during their 1874 Black Hills Expedition. This is hopefully the first in a series of Custer 1874 BH Expedition caches. I’m using Ernest Grafe & Paul Horsted’s book – “Exploring With Custer” book as my source.

The morning of the 14th was a sad morning for the 7th Calvary. They had just buried Private James King. (Oldest Graves of the Black Hills Cache) Private King had died the night before of dysentery, but Custer apparently was feeling too impatient to pay his respects. They made their way out of the hills and headed up through present day Black Hawk. Just to the east of Piedmont they rounded Piedmont Butte and headed northeast and then north again toward Bear Butte.

The first stage of the cache is located at the Piedmont Cemetery. There are 4 Military head stones that you will have to get the clues off of in order to find the final stage. Please use stealth as the final stage is located on the road easement. The view looking south from the final stage is where Custer and the 7th came through this valley.

When you arrive at the Piedmont Cemetery find the following head stones:

1. Corpl. Louis Corteux
2. 1st SGT John S. Wells
3. PVT Jerome B. Potter
4. William D. Linscott

Final Stage Cordinates:
N44 AA.BBB
W103 CC.DDD

AA= The decade Pvt. Jerome B. Potter died minus 2.
BBB= William D. Linscott year of birth plus year of death minus 3272.
CC= Corpl. Louis Corteux – His infantry unit number minus 26.
DDD= 1st Sgt. John S. Wells – The number of LETTERS on his head stone plus 832.

Remember to please use lots of stealth and rehide the cache well.
