... and then Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

From Nelsons Bay you will recognise this hill from the large telecommunication towers perched on top, when you get up there the car park isn't the main attraction by far, neither are the towers... but then after you get past all that you have an amazing lookout.

The first time I came to the Port Stephens area my father took me up to the top of this hill, and I fell in love with the area.

The lookout itself was constructed in 1997 by Nelson Bay APEX club and is considered a highlight for the area with many tourists visiting especially during the summer months.

When you get to the top of the viewing platform it is possible to look south to the opposite side of the peninsula, south-west down to the stacks of Newcastle and the cargo vessels in its harbour, west to the mountain boundary, north-west over Soldiers Point, spanning eastwards over Hawks Nest, the two gigantic headlands that loom over the Port's entrance, Nelson Head and Nelson Bay.

The road to Gan Gan is roughly 1.5 km south-west of the city centre along Stockton Rd is the turnoff to the right (signposted on your left) along Lily Hill Rd which will take you up to the Gan Gan Lookout car park. Lily Hill Rd is named after the abundance of enormous Gymea lilies to be found at the top the hill. The stalks, which grow to 5 metres, can be eaten and were used by the Aborigines for spears.

My sister will be maintaining this cache, and hopefully will also be joining the ranks of Geocachers very soon.
