Geocache Description:

Ponte Romana da Ribeira de Odivelas
Roman Bridge of Ribeira de Odivelas

The roman bridge of Vila Ruiva of Ribeira de Odivelas, was built by the Romans on the I a.C. but, nevertheless, there are traces of additions and reconstructions by Arabs, Visigoths and other nations followed the Roman occupation.

This bridge, with 116 meters in length, width between 4.90 and 5.60 m and its highest point of 5.3 m, is one of the most monumental bridges of this period existing in Portugal.

This bridge was part of the old roman road that linked Faro to Beja and from here to Évora and Mérida. Today, over 2000 years, classified as National Monument, continues to link Vila Ruiva to Cuba.

Comprising 36 openings, 20 arches of various types and 16 holes of discharge, 15 of these arches and holes of discharge cannot be seen because they are partially buried.
