Geocache Description:

The old Smith Mcgee bridge that connects Georgia to South Carolina via passage over the Savannah River is still there - at least the Georgia half. This bridge is one of the old iron monsters and still served as the HWY 181 cross over until about 1982. At that time, the powers that be were under construction of the current bridge, a more modern, all cement structure. While the new bridge was being built, a worker hauling trash materials across the old bridge forgot to lower the dumping mechanism on the back of his truck and halfway across, it caught the metal top. It tore the bridge down from the half-way point to the South Carolina side, killing the driver of the truck who became submerged in the river. Passage over the Savannah halted from that moment on until construction was finished on the new bridge in 1983. I have vague memories of my parents driving me over the old bridge and I always thought how neat it was with its cracked concrete road that seemed to leave only inches between two passing cars and its rusty metal skeleton. It is now a fishing pier and a beautiful spot to see the Savannah from directly in the middle of the river. Though its history is marked with tragedy, I hope you take a moment to enjoy the beauty of the area for yourself.

The original cache was muggled or went fishing. I've replaced it with a "micro". I've also upped the difficulty a little because this one will take some looking to find. *One final warning. If you're caching with small children, be very watchful. There is a fenced in portion on the bottom part of the bridge railing, but a fast and crafty kid could easily climb over it and fall into the drink, so you may want to keep them close and watch for fishing Muggles - it's a pier, remember.

Thanks to Keith Whitaker of the Ga. State Park Service for his help and permission for this cache.
