Geocache Description:

This is a multi. It is situated in the Mt. Ngongotaha Reserve. The first coordinates take you to a point where those for the cache may be found.

Follow Paradise Valley Road from the intersection of Pukehangi and Clayton roads, up hill until you see a sign that "Engine braking restriction ends". Another sign indicates "Walking Tracks". Park in the car park off the road. At the start of the walking track there is a sign "Violet Bonnington Reserve" that is not easily visible from the road.

The Jubilee track was cut January 1890 (says the story) but until recently was accessible only from private land. The local branch of Forest and Bird recently used a bequest from the estate of Violet Bonnington to purchase and develop a small block of land between the reserve and the road.

The reserve is being developed by the Mt. Ngongotaha Bush Restoration Society, and the area has many cut lines for access to poison bait stations for vermin control.

NB THE CACHE IS NOT A WHITE PLASTIC POISON BAIT STATION!

Follow the walking track. Easy to start with, it gets steeper and more uneven further up. This cache is for the active person. Pass the remaining live rata tree. Do not take the left hand branch, the Nature Walk. Continue until you find the first clue, the coordinates of the cache. At this point a new track deviates to the right away from the old route to rejoin it, completing the Nature Walk loop above the cache location. You can take either the old route (signposted 'Jubilee Track') or the 'Nature Walk' which is easier (see map). You don't have to scramble about in the bush....the cache is not far from the (original, Jubilee) track. Return down the old track, or complete the 'Nature Walk' loop, or follow the old track up.

The walk to the cache takes about 30 minutes from the carpark. Above the cache the Jubilee track continues on to the access road to the summit (locked) and if you do reach the summit, there is no view unless telecomm installations are your thing. There is another cache though...
