Belvoir Lodge (S Notts) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

John Stead: I am sad to archive this as it is nearly 6 years old and I loved the spot but in view of the last log it is clearly no longer accessible. Whether it really is dangerous is a moot point and one which of course I considered when I replaced it a couple of months ago.
I am particularly sorry as there is a Travel Bug there which has so far travelled over 11000 miles.

Geocache Description:

A quiet canal towpath in the lovely Vale of Belvoir

The name - well Belvoir is pronounced like the aquatic dam builder but the lodge is really only a hut, built for the lengthsmen or maintenance men when this was a working canal. However it is a good excuse to visit this most attractive canal and learn something of the restoration plans. If you like what you see, why not walk more of the canal? You have 33 miles to choose from between the Trent at Nottingham and the A1 at Grantham. I could give you a potted history here but you will do better to go to the official site of the canal at this web site and maybe even join one of the supporting organizations as the Grantham Canal Restoration Society which has been working towards full restoration for over 30 years.

The cache - well it really is in a hut but in summer at least you would be forgiven for missing it for the vegetation which covers it. But there is a way in - just be careful not to bring the roof down on your head - but do look up when you get in. Mind the fishermen don't see you going in and out! The terrain rating only has the extra half point because of the narrow entry to the hut as the towpath is a good path. The hut is not in good condition and although I don't think it will fall down on you, enter at your own risk and be careful. Please take care in replacing that the screening piece of wood is in place but the box is not too far back to be reached.
