Geocache Description:

Published in 1872, Under the Greenwood Tree was Thomas Hardy's second novel. It is his shortest work and, unusually for him, has a happy ending. In 2005 ITV made a film of Under the Greenwood Tree which was filmed entirely in Jersey (except for the shots of the large beech tree, which is in Ashridge Park, Hertfordshire), mainly at Hamptonne Country Life Museum. It was first broadcast on Boxing Day of that year.

The clues for this cache can be found on the roads and footpaths around Hamptonne.

Hamptonne is well worth a visit, but is closed during the winter. More details about it can be found here. Although run by the Jersey Heritage Trust, Hamptonne is owned by the National Trust for Jersey which means that those visitors who are members of a National Trust which has a reciprocal arrangement with the National Trust for Jersey can get in free (this includes members of the British National Trusts).

The co-ordinates given above are for the suggested parking place for this cache, a grassed area by the side of the road at the north of Waterworks Valley. The clues can be collected, and the cache found, on a pleasant walk from here, which should not take more than an hour. All the clues can be found within a few feet of roads, although the final cache is a little further from the road. If you use footpaths as well as roads to find the clues you can avoid some doubling back on yourself. There are couple of hills on the route.

This cache used to use clues from information boards situated at the start and at Location 2. Since the cache was published these boards have been removed. Until such time as the boards are returned, the clues to the final cache have been rewritten so that Location 2 is no longer needed. However, it is still recommended that you park at the cache co-ordinates. If you walk via Location 2, you can collect the answers to the two remaining clues on a pleasant circular (or Q-shaped) walk, incorporating a footpath.

The clues can be found at the following locations (decide for yourself the best route between them):

Location 1. N 49° 13.448' W 002° 08.157'

Location 2. N 49° 13.606' W 002° 08.013'

Location 3. N 49° 13.407' W 002° 08.125'

At Location 1, note down the date that appears above the large archway. Call this Date 1. The digits of this date are ABCD.

At Location 3, note down the date above the door of the building. Call this Date 3. The digits of this date are EFGH.

The co-ordinates of the cache are N 49 13.nnn W 002 07.www.

Work out the three-digit number nnn as follows:
nnn = [(Date 3 - Date 1) x D] - (D + G).

Work out the three-digit number www as follows:
www = [(Date 3 - Date 1) x B x H] - A

The cache is a medium-sized tupperware box with the usual swaps.
