Geocache Description:

Located along Park Road 31, just on the other side of a private fence you can see the remains of St. Joseph Church-Honey Creek. Please do not cross the fence. The cache is not on the other side. The old church is located on private property. You must view it from the roadside.

German immigrants settled this area in 1852. Local lore says that it got its name after children were sent to a nearby creek to get water and they found a large number of bees swarming above it. The families then decided to name their new community Honey Creek. Some believe the name was given because of the abundance of honeycomb rocks in the area.

On August 20, 1876 a log chapel was built and St. Joseph-Honey Creek became a parish. That structure burned down so a second church was built in 1878. The stone chapel remained in use until 1892. The cache offers a view of the remains of the church.

We hope you enjoy this historical spot but please do not cross the fence.
