Geocache Description:

The third cache in this series takes you down to the coast and along the old Milnthorpe branch line which used to cross the River Bela on a fine viaduct.

The railway embankment formed part of the link between Arnside and Hincaster to join the main west-coast line. There was a mighty 26 arch viaduct carrying the line over the river. It must of been a fine sight but unfortunately it was demolished in 1963 as part of Dr. Beeching's cuts.

The viaduct as it was. Thanks to Guanajuato for finding the pic.

From DD2 - Haverbrack Hill
After enjoying the grand view, head down the hill following the west side of the wall down to the small lane. Go straight across onto another nice footpath, which follows around the field through the woods. Not much sign of Hollin's Well.

At the end of the wood, follow the path across a field into the last bit of wood. This comes out by the Shoreline Business Park. Across the road are the concrete steps down onto the embankment. Follow it along to the cache, which is on the top of the embankment - no need to scrabble about down the sides. The GPS signal can vary with the trees so you may need the hint. Please re-hide well.

Once found, head down the sloping path to the shore - great views across the bay and some lovely grass and limestone on the point. Follow the shore around to the river and back up to the bridge. The weir was built to keep a more constant water level in the river in front of Dallam Tower to improve the view. On very high tides it is covered and water can sometimes even flood the road near the Old Bridge.

We hope you enjoy your walk and the contrasting scenery. There's lots of history around here and some interesting corners to explore. If you are in need of refreshment, a mile towards Arnside is the Ship Inn, and Milnthorpe has plenty of options.
