This cache has been archived.

HomerJFong: I think everybody who attended has logged in. With the last of the travel bugs grabbed, it looks like it is time to archive.

Geocache Description:

I'd been needling beelow about doing another New Year Event when I ran into him at events. At the event this past weekend I decided that if he wouldn't do it, I would. I got the go ahead, so here we go!

A slightly different setting this year than last. From a rather open park with somewhat of a wooded area, to a park with a lot more woods, and therefore more potential hiding places for the regifts. If you attended last year's, you know what I mean. If not, then read on.

This is a geocaching event that will allow you to trade that present that you didn't quite care for, as you gather in Kitchener for the first event of 2008. Cachers that attend this event will bring a gift of some sort (unless this is a true regift, let's keep the value of the gift under $10.00). They will then hide a cache somewhere in Breithaupt Park. There are over 5km of trails in the park according to the City of Kitchener, so there should be no problem in finding a location.

Where: Meet at the picnic table pavilion in Breithaupt Park.

There is plenty of parking at Breithaupt Center off of Margaret Avenue. The entrance to the lot is directly across from the Giant Tiger. If the lot is full, you might also be able to park at the Giant Tiger, as it is closed on New Years Day.

When: 12 noon on New Years Day, 2008.

Tentative Schedule:

Noon to 1:15PM: Registration. After registering, head out into the woods and hide their cache containing either the regift or a 'redemption certificate' of some sort that the finder will give to the hider in order to claim their gift. Note that this is not an evil event, so the containers must be at least bigger than a film canister or Altoids tin. Also, no 12 stage redirects either! If you want to use plaques that you see in the park and have some math, that's fine. A simple sudoku puzzle? Sure! But, the first container that someone comes across should be the final for your regift cache. Everything needed to find the cache should fit on a simple 8*11 piece of paper. If it is a puzzle, print it out before coming. When done with the hide, return to me and give me the sheet with the information about your cache on it.

Posthide to 1:15 PM: Let's eat! It will be potluck style, so please try and bring something. The City of Kitchener frowns on the use of BBQs and such in their parks, so if you bring something, it had better not need heating. Unhealthy food is the preference! Let's wreck that New Year's Resolution on the first day!

1:30 to 2:30 PM: Kids cache! The children (13 and under) will solve some sort of word search in order to get to the final. In the final there will be a ticket that can be cashed in at the kids prize table. (See 'Cost:' for more information on that. At the same time, a new cache will go live and I'll distribute the info sheet for that one. Currently, there are three active ones, and I may place one or two more loggable caches between now and the event. Currently active caches are GC105TD, GC79A3 (iced in for the winter and not available), GC17N8V and GCX232 (the final is in the park, and I will provide anybody who asks at the events with the co-ordinates for the final). There are also more than 40 caches within 3km of the event.

2:30: The drawing of co-ords for the regifts. Once you have yours, head off into the woods and find your gift. When you've found it, return to the pavillion to register it so I can publish a master list of who got and gave what. If you need to claim it because the hider left a claim check for you, then the pavillion is a great place to meet up and make the exchange.

4:00: Gather back at the pavillion for prize draws (if any). If not, see you in 2009!

What is needed:

-Folding card tables or the like: N/A
-Any special foodstuffs: A couple offers, so far.
-Any additional prizes for the kids table: Homer
-Paper plates/plastic forks/etc: Muddy Mae and Max Power
-Napkins: Muddy Mae and Max Power
-Assistant to help with Travel Bugs registration: N/A due to lack of bugs
-Assistant to record the who's and what's of the regifts:

Cost: Nothing except the regift, but I will put out a donation box for those that wish to donate something. If you are bringing children that wish to participate in the Kids cache, I request that you bring one gift ($5.00 or so) for every child that will be participating in the cache.

When logging a will attend, say how many, and if applicable, how many children will be with you. This is going to be outdoors, so please dress accordingly. I'll say this is going to go ahead rain, snow or shine, but if the forecast calls for dangerous driving conditions, such as freezing rain, I will postpone the event until the 5th. Watch this listing in case circumstances force that. Difficulty rating is due to the start time. What shape will you, and your head be in?
