Geocache Description:

This is a book exchange cache.

Welcome to the “Savage Tract”. This wooded area is provincially owned crown land. According to government info: "Acquired in 1963, this land contains several pine plantations and two lowland hardwood areas. The lowland areas are generally wet, but provide good habitat for wetland wildlife."

There recommended access to this cache is along Valens Road with roadside parking for likely only one vehicle. Parking is located at N43 21.236 W80 07.488, with the trail-head at N43 21.213 W80 07.535.
The cache is located about 10m off the trail with only light bushwacking required.

The cache contains paperback novels but no traditional trade items. The idea of this cache is that if you have enjoyed a good novel and would like to pass it on, bring it here to exchange it for another. Please try to keep to paperback novel sized books with a more general appeal to avoid the cache from accumulating books no one else may be  interested in. Although the cache name is “Savage Fiction” any genre of paperback novel is welcome: fiction, non-fiction, horror, self-help, history, autobiography, science-fiction, romance… whatever.

Please only trade books. Travelbugs and geocoins are also welcome.  No traditional trade items, please. Before you leave your book why not register it first at Bookcrossings.com? Membership is free and the book is then sort of like a travel bug, you can see where it goes and who reads it.

Also, please ensure that the book or books that you leave are INDIVIDUALLY contained in a plastic zipper locked bag. Each of the original books were in separate bags, but I recommended that you bring your book already in a new bag. The cache container is a large plastic camouflaged bucket with a screw-top lid and an o-ring seal.  Instructions for ‘unlocking’ and opening the cache container are printed on the lid. The lid instructions are getting a bit hard to read now. Along the inside edge of the lid there is a lock leaver. Push the lever in with one finger and while holding the lever in with one hand, rotate the cover. The cover screws off. You don't need to hold the lever down when screwing the lid back on, but make sure it is tight but not cross threaded. The o-ring seal needs to be tight to keep the books dry. When you open the cache, please try to prevent any rain or snow from entering the cache and leave the cache as it was found, in an upright and secure position. Hopefully these precautions will keep all the books safe and dry.

When you log your find please indicate which book you removed (title and author), and which book you left (title and author).

NOTE: It is apparent that this area is used for hunting, so extra care should be taken during hunting season.

As of Jan 20, 2008 the books contained in this cache (original contents) were:

Manhattan North Homicide – Thomas McKenna
Vinyl Café Unplugged – Stuart McLean
Hollywood Wives – Jackie Collins
Primal Fear – William Diehl
Christmas Party – Janelle Denison & Stephanie Bond
Scottish Ghosts – Lily Seafield
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – Richard Carlson
Delores Claborne – Stephen King
An Absence of Light – David Lindsey
The Last Juror – John Grisham
Dark Rivers of the Heart – Dean Koontz

May 16, 2010 - If you are approaching from Parking #2, note that the trail seems to end abruptly at one location. It does not, an old tree has fallen onto the trail and obscures it. I have added a few orange trail flagging tape markers for a very short bushwack around the old tree and back to the trail. I hope that helps.

June 2014 - NOTE - The "trails" that lead to the cache were much more visible when this cache was originally placed. Some of the trails have now grown over quite a bit and are quite difficult to follow. Also, the ice storm in Dec 2013 has also damaged a lot of trees in certain areas and has changed the the "trails" as well as the area immediately around the cache. I almost could not recognize the GZ location when I stopped for a visit. The result is that the terrain difficulty might be a bit higher now due to the fact that you might loose the trail and a lot more bushwacking might be required now than when the cache was originally placed.
