Geocache Description:

The St Lucia site forms a large part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, which consolidates a
number of protected areas previously considered separate entities including the St Lucia Game Reserve, False Bay Nature Reserve, St Lucia Park, Sodwana Bay State Forest, Cape Vidal State Forest, Eastern Shores State Forest, part of the Dukuduku State Forest, Umfolozi Swamps State Forest, Mkuze Swamp and Mhlatuze State Forest. Situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the St Lucia System is the largest estuarine system on the African continent, and forms a critical habitat for a large number of species and several communities.

It contains, for example, the largest hippopotamus Hippopotamus amphibius, crocodile Crocodylus niloticus, white pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus and pinkbacked pelican Pelicanus rufescens populations in South Africa, as well as extensive Cyperus papyrus swamps, and Barringtonia racemosa swamp forest.

The system displays extremely high productivity, and is without doubt one of the most outstanding wildlife areas on the African continent. Over 340 species of bird have been recorded within the area, including at least 20 species of ducks and geese, two flamingo species Phoenicopterus ruber and P. minor, and some 15 species of herons and egrets. According to various surveys, 82 species of fish have been recorded in the St Lucia system. Numerous species of larval fish frequenting shallow, marginal areas use the system as a nursery area, and many adult fish enter the area to feed.

The Santa Lucia is a boat with a guided tour following the St Lucia river on a 2 hour journey. Please feel free to join the trip as the tour guide explains the wetland history and features. Special stops are made to look at crocodiles and pods of Hippos. The tour costs are R120 per person and well worth it.

The departure times are shown on the photograph
