A Village for Chauncey Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

CalumetPlace: After the recent DNF I took the walk this afternoon to check on things. Leg 1 is missing again. On to leg 2 and disappointingly, it is also gone from its nice little hiding spot out in the middle of nowhere.

The village remains while Chauncy and now this cache fade off into history.

Thanks to all who came by to visit.

Geocache Description:

Three leg multi in the wilds of Depew.

A village for Chauncey

The Village of Depew is unique to the suburbs in that it straddles two townships:
Transit Road divides the village: those living east of Transit are residents of the Town of Lancaster, those living to the west are residents of the Town of Cheektowaga.

One of the earliest settlers in the area was Appolos Hitchcock, who came in 1808 to settle south of Broadway along Cayuga Creek, west of Bordon Road. He served as a liaison and agent between the Holland Land Company and the Indians. Appolos Hitchcock induced German settlers to come to town by clearing a piece of land and renting or selling to them. Soon, Dutch, Hungarians, Ukrainians and Poles moved to the rural area.

In 1893, at the peak of the Industrial Age, a group of investors led by Chauncey Depew envisioned the area as a prominent center of commerce. The Depew Investment Company was formed and purchased 1,000 acres of land north and south of the tracks for their enterprise. Original shareholders included John J. Albright, George Urban, Wilson Bissell and Charles Gould.

Locals began referring to it as "the place where Depew is building." By 1893, the National Car Wheel Works, the Gould Coupler Works, the Union Car company, and the Brassworks were built and in operation, with a promise of more to come. When residents organized to plan the future of their booming community, it seemed only natural to name it after the man who spurred its creation. The Village of Depew was incorporated July 23, 1894.

The cache is a 3 leg multi starting at the edge of Firemen’s Park on the Cheektowaga side of the village. Ample parking is available near the Skating Rink and Pool. Your hike will take you into one of the undeveloped areas of the village, between where rail sidings ran at one time. The sidings are long since abandoned and the only evidence remaining is the fine stone work of the gutters along the sides the railbed.

You are looking for two cammo’d micro containers and a small coffee can. All, I think, are well hidden in plain sight. From stage 1 to stage 2 there is an easy way, and a more difficult way; the choice is yours, depending on how far you want to walk. There is room, but BYOP.

For FTF, I have placed an inactivated TravelBug for your enjoyment. I’ve also dropped another TB and a Coin for movement. And as always, I'd appreciate comments on the coordinates and difficulty rating.

Congratulations to Hucklebuckle and Cayuga Crew for the wet, and slippery FTF.
