Sand Ridge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mountainfolk.: New neighbor must be a bit more protective of his property. Since this one is close to their property line, I will archive it so no-one gets "run off".

Geocache Description:

Sand Ridge Geography Cache.

Sand Ridge (elevation 1500 ft.) runs from Bellefonte to Lamar and divides Nittany Valley with Little Nittany Valley to its north. Nittany Valley is in the western part of the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian Mountains. During the Appalachian orogeny, the sedimentary rock layers folded up into the Nittany Arch. The arch was an ancient Himalayan scale mountain that towered above what is now the valley. The oldest rock layers from deep within the eroded mountain are now exposed on Sand Ridge in the middle of Nittany Valley. Most of the ridge is now covered in young forest interspersed with several new housing developments.

Sand Ridge is accessible from Nittany Valley Drive (State Rt. 64 and State Rt. 550) to the south and the Jacksonville Road (State Rt. 26) to the north. Interstate 80 (I-80) also runs diagonally across Nittany Valley on an east / west line on the north flank of Sand Ridge. Three highways traverse over the ridge; Forest Avenue at Zion, Hubler Ridge Road at Hublersburg, and the Sand Ridge Road at Snydertown. End of geography lesson. :)

The cache is located on private ground with the owner's permission. Contrary to the map, this is a roadside cache. Recommended parking is along the access road or at the cul-de-sac.

(Access to the cache directly from I-80 is illegal and not recommended.)

The Cache, a Nalgene 16 oz. jar, contains a log book and small trade items. The cache should be a fairly quick find as long as you have seen this type of hide before. If not, you may get stumped. If too many DNF's occur, hints will be added.

Disclaimer: Coordinates could only be set with no better than 20 ft. accuracy on our GPS at this location.

Good luck and enjoy!

Congrats to the CARELS for the FTF!
