Il "Santuario di Santa Maria ad Fontem" è una
chiesa che è stata costruita su un fontanile presso l’antico guado
del fiume Lambro. Trae origine da una religiosità popolare antica e
rivolta all'acqua. Si hanno notizie dell'esistenza fin dal 1200. I
locatesi si recavano al santuario per lavarsi alla sorgente (oggi
ancora visibile), e spesso furono salvati dal flagello della
peste.
Le prime notizie certe risalgono a quando il santuario fu donato
nel 1522 dalle famiglia dei Trivulzio all’Ordine dei Padri Serviti,
a seguito di un evento miracoloso. Dagli occhi di san Gerolamo, in
un dipinto esistente nell'oratorio personale del palazzo milanese
dei Trivulzio,sarebbero sgorgate delle lacrime, che una volta
raccolte, si sarebbero trasformate in sangue. Divulgata la notizia
del miracolo, ne seguì un tale accorrere di folla che decisero di
trasferire il dipinto a Locate. Nella chiesa verrà così dedicato un
altare laterale proprio a San Gerolamo.
Rimarrà ai Servi di Maria fino al 1799. Alla soppressione
dell'ordine venne riacquistato dalla famiglia Trivulzio. Tornerà
alle funzioni religiose al ritorno dell'esilio francese di Cristina
Trivulzio, principessa di Belgiojoso, che lo restaurò ed impegnò
anche i suoi successori alla ordinaria manutenzione "onde
conservarlo in stato lodevole".
Nel 1928 riprende ad avere una vita con una presenza stabile della
chiesa, anche se tuttora di proprietà privata.
Nel mese di giugno, in occasione della ricorrenza dell’Ascensione
la Chiesa è meta di pellegrinaggio e nel paese di Locate di Triulzi
esiste ancora la "Festa della fontana", tradizione secolare.
Oggi rimane sopra l’altare maggiore della chiesa inferiore un
dipinto di una Madonna col Bambino di scuola leonardesca,
capolavoro del rinascimento lombardo, recentemente restaurato e
riportato alla bellezza originaria.
Quando si entra nella chiesa si vede l'altare principale con due
scale sulla destra e sulla sinistra che portano sotto, all'altare
basso that è esattamente sotto il primo. Sulla scala di destra c'è
un cancello (solitamente chiuso) che porta fuori verso le "Fontane
Battesimali"... da dove il Santuario ha preso il proprio nome.

The "Santuario di Santa Maria ad Fontem"
(literally "Sanctuary of Saint Mary at the springs") is a church
that has been built over an old ford of the Lambro river. Its name
recalls an ancient popular tradition connected to the water. There
are information of the existence of this church since XI century.
The 'Locatesi' (the name of the inhabitants of the close village of
Locate Di Triulzi) were going to the Sanctuary to wash themselves
at the spring (that is still visible), and they have been often
saved from the plague.
The first written information are dated 1522 when the Sanctuary
was donated to the "Ordine dei Padri Serviti" (literally 'Order of
the serverd priests') from the Trivulzio family, after something
that was considered a miracle. From the eyes of Saint Gerolamo, on
a painting part of the private collection in a palace in Milan of
the Trivulzio family, started appearing some tears than, once
collected, turned into blood. When this news spread out, lot of
people start coming to visit the painting and then the family
decided to move it in Locate. One of the side altar of the church
was then dedicated to Saint Gerolamo.
The Sanctuary did remain to the Order until 1799. When the Order
was suppressed, the Sanctuary has been bought back by the Trivulzio
family, and it got back to the religious services only when
Cristina Trivulzio, princess of Belgiojoso, came back from the
exile in France. Princess Cristina restored the Sanctuary and had
his successors promise to go on maintaining it so "it could have
been kept in a laudable way".
In 1928 the Sanctuary got back to life after someone moved there,
even though it is still private property.
During the month of June, during the Ascension Day, the church is
the destination of the pilgrimage and in the village of Locate Di
Triulzi it is still celebrated the "Festa della fontana" (literally
"Fair of the Spring"), of secular tradition.
Over the main altar of the lower church, there is a painting
"Madonna con Bambino" that is from Leonardo da Vinci school. This
masterpiece has been recently restored back to its beauty.
When you enter in the church you will see the main altar with two
stair on the left and on the right that takes you down to the lower
altar that is right under the main one. On the right stairs there
is a gate (normally closed) that takes you outside to the "Fontane
Battesimali" (Springs for baptize)... from where the Sanctuary got
its name.
