Bear Run
Bear Run is located in the Cherry Run Gamelands (State Gamelands (SGL) 295). Please review the Cherry Run Geocache (GC17QM4) for historical information on the gamelands.
The Bear Run and Cherry Run Trails can be combined to complete a 10 mile circuit hike. We have setup a 5 stage multicache, "Hiking 101" (#GC1C8TF), that follows this loop. See Hike # 27 in "50 Hikes in Central Pennsylvania" by Tom Thwaites (Third Edition) for more details.
This circuit trail is also a great mountain bike ride! See the Bear Mountain Ride # 16 in "Mountain Biking Bald Eagle State Forest" by Rob Ginieczki (Griz Guides) for more details.
The trailhead to this geocache is at the Gamelands parking lot located 4.2 miles south of Lamar on State Route 2002. Parking coordinates: N 40° 59.130 W 77° 29.192.
Pass the vehicle gate and continue up the Bear Run Trail to the cache. The trail is rocky so wear appropriate footwear. Remember that this is State Gamelands, so do not forget to wear orange during the hunting seasons.
Disclaimer: GPS reception is a bit sketchy in this tight hollow. Coordinates could only be set with no better than 21 ft. accuracy on our GPS at this location. If too many DNF's occur, hints will be added.
Congrats to the CARELS for the FTF!
