Geocache Description:

Dylan’s Cache is an ammo can with theme appropriate stickers for you in the log book bag. Please take one.

This cache is about a young friend of mine who also happens to be scout in the Cub Scout Den in which I am the adult leader. His father and I are close friends and when I told him that I would like to do a cache in Dylan’s honor, I believe he was touched by it and he gave me his permission to do so.

In the last four years I have watched Dylan grow and mature in a remarkable manner. That’s not to say I haven’t watched all the boys in our den, including my son, also grow and mature. It’s just that it’s easier for them. As a result of Dylan being developmentally disabled, it is a harder and more difficult journey for him. As Dylan grows and advances, he has to work twice as hard to get half as far. The amazing thing is that he hasn’t let it dampen his spirits. The following is an e-mail I received from him as part of a requirement he had to do in order to earn his “Communication Badge” as a Webelos Scout. (Permission to reprint this letter was granted by Dylan and his father.)

“Dear mark foige man Iam Wrkeing on my skills book and its My wheebuios 2book and iam riting to you so can you read this email that rot to you this is abaote cube scaots and its betr the n be foer and this was sinde by me and it will be the best letter ever and read THis email

p.s.Luve Dylan.”

As you can see, we can all read and understand Dylan’s letter, but it’s just a little more difficult for us. What I would like you to do when you log your find, is write it in Dylanesque style and see how hard it might be for you to make us understand your meaning.

As a side note, the large complex you see see through the trees located near the cache site is called the “Buck Institute for Age Research”. It is scientific research organizations like this that I hope will someday unlock the mysteries of the mind and help eliminate these types of disabilities in the future.

Hey Dylan – thanks for being my friend!!!

(This cache can not be accessed from Nunes Drive even though it looks like you can. You can park at the trailhead at N 38° 07.646 W 122° 34.587. Once you cross the creek just past the bridge you can head north (N 38° 07.740 W 122° 34.645) and follow the west side of the fence line to the top of the hill. This will avoid all the switchbacks on the regular trail.)
