Lots of history here, plan on spending some time and look around. You can continue past the gate on a nice trail that will take you to another area like this one. It does have a fence around it and you are not allowed to go in.
SHASTA was named after an Indian Tribe. Most people call it Old SHASTA. Actually a shipping center until the Railroad laid track in Redding. SHASTA was the entrance to the rich mines in the back country, as well as a stage stop. SHASTA was also the supply depot for mule trains heading to the mines. A hundred mule trains and teams were known to stop on a single night. The demise of SHASTA occurred around 1888 because of the railroad.
