Geocache Description:

Nice journey in History

Your journey to this cache is to start at N: 41.55.451; E: 25.19.279. Photo 1. This is Gorno Briastovo and you are to start your ascent towards AIDA Peak. Eyebrows up? Don’t worry. You are to go only to the first stop: Sharapanite. Elevation gain about 150m only! What is Sharapana? Later on that just follow the road. You may go on foot, or you may go by car. You may follow the asphalt road, or you may take the short and very steep cut through the forest. It’s up to you. If you decided to take the asphalt, then your first discovery would be at N: 41.54.822; E: 25.19.453. And it’s worth seeing. Because it’s the conning-tower and the control room (stripped of whatever equipment inside) of the first ever Bulgarian submarine – Submariner#18. See photos 2 and 3. She had been a German manufactured class UB-1-8 submarine commissioned in April 1915, assembled from parts transported by rail in Pola port on the Danube River. After that she had sailed to the Black sea. Bulgarian flag had been flown on her stern on April 15th 1916. After the truce signed in 1918 in Thessaloníki, the submarine had been sailed by a French crew to Tzarigrad, now Istanbul, where she had been scrapped. 200 meters on the road more and you can have a rest at N: 41.54.944; E: 25.19.417 enjoying a beautiful view of the valley below. Then it’s time to go much back in history and see your first Sharapani at N:41.55.087;E:25.19.145. Photos 4, 5, 6. They are wine making devices cut out in the cliffs and used by the ancient Thracian for their numerous religious rituals. Make a point that they are located not in the valley, where the grapes are usually found, but high in the mountains, near to the Gods. And it’s time now to find your cache. It’s very, very near. Good luck. Don't forget your pen....
