Another great spot in the Calicos for views and caches.
Since Landloper was in town for a brief visit we had to get out there and do a little hiking in our Calicos. We nabbed a couple that we hadn't found before and placed this one. This is a cache placement I have wanted to do almost since I started geocaching, but FINALLY got around to doing it now.
If you look at your topo maps you can find the better ways to approach this location, as we did. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES is this cache accessible from the Calico Ghost Town. You need to get there from some point along the Doran Scenic Drive, or possibly by a longer hike from the St Louis Mine area, we haven't tried that. We hiked from the bottom but you may want to approach from the other end, your choice. Your choice also how long a hike. From the Doran Scenic Drive we hiked about another 0.3 of a mile to the cache. There are shorter, but steeper, approaches from one or more of the mine roads into the area.
We left the Doran Scenic Drive at about N 34 57.431, W 116 51.521, and I would recommend that as the most gradual climb, but suit yourself.
The cache container is an ammo box painted to match the surroundings. Be careful of the numerous mines in the area.
Also, as always in the desert, plan your hike carefully, carry adequate water, watch out for critters and loose rocks. We placed this in December and it was a very pleasant hike. In the summer it will be extremely hot so prepare accordingly.
