Geocache Description:

Absinthe
Traditional absinthe is a highly alcoholic (generally over 100 proof) distilled spirit flavored by including a number of herbs in the distillation process, including green anise and most uniquely wormwood among others. It originated in Switzerland during the late 18th century as a medicinal elixir, but came to prominence as the favorite beverage of many notable writers and artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries such as Vincent van Gogh, Édouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, Oscar Wilde and Ernest Hemingway.

Vilification of absinthe began in the 1860s with questionable scientific experiments that were used to conclude that thujone, a chemical derived from wormwood caused absinthe to be more dangerous than alcohol alone. Hallucinogenic effects were also attributed to absinthe by proponents and opponents alike. The backlash against absinthe lead by wine makers and temperance movements linked many crimes and other public ills to absinthe consumption. These efforts were successful in many countries leading the the ban of absinthe in much of Europe and the US, starting with Belgium in 1906 and culminating with France in 1915. Switzerland the country of absinthe's origin even wrote the absinthe ban into their constitution.

Modern studies have have shown that absinthe has no greater hallucinogenic properties than similar quantities of alcohol containing no wormwood/thujone. Further thujone is a major ingredient (up to 50%) of sage and sage oils, which are listed on the FDA list of items considered safe for human consumption.

Starting in the 1990's there was a resurgence of interest in absinthe and bans in a number of countries began to be challenged. Today it has regained legal status in many of the countries where it was once illegal including the US where a small number of brands are legally imported. On December 21st, 2007 the first US produced absinthe went on sale in Alameda, California, produced by the company located very close to the final stage of this cache.
