Geocache Description:

A fun multi-stage cache located in the Messerschmidt Pond Wildlife Management Area. This is an area that I had frequented as a youth, and saw this as an opportunity to share it with others.

Through out time this area, before it became a wildlife management area, was known as Doane's Sawmill, Messerschmidt Hardware Mill and The Deep River Manufacturing Company. From 1928 to 1974, Deep River manufactured nickel-plated nut crackers and picks within two buildings at this location. Manufacturing processes included machining, stamping, cleaning, and nickel-plating. In 1974, Deep River went out of business and abandoned the property. CT DEP purchased the property in 1982. CT DEP demolished the manufacturing building in 1987, and a plating shed in 1988. Fortunately this area has grown in to an area well used for many outdoor activities
