Chibichiri Gama Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

P_chan: It appears that people are no longer welcomed at Chibichiri-gama. It's a shame really, it was a great place with a great story behind it. It was always open to the public and I always had good conversations with some of the locals I'd meet while visiting which led me to want to share this place with the geocaching community. I can't help but wonder if the increased traffic from my cache is what caused this. Oh well, I now just ask that you please honor the requests of the family members of the deceased. Thanks to those users who gave me a heads and this cache is now archived, at least it lasted as long as it did.

After looking at some of the pictures people took with trackable items I think I understand why that sign was put up. People hanging around waiting for locals to leave, loitering and letting their kids run around, and people hanging a trackable item on the the memorial stone and taking a picture. It appears that some cachers were unable to understand that this is a grave site and that proper respect needed to be rendered while looking for this cache. You wouldn't have a picnic in a graveyard, hang items on other people's headstones and take a picture, or let your kids run rampant would you? I blame myself for not stressing the importance and sensitivity of this site. It's a shame really, at least this will always be a special place for myself and hopefully others who were able to comprehend the significance of this site.

Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden near Chibichiri Gama in Yomiton! "Gama" means cave, so yes it is hidden near a cave. Many locals hid in this cave during WWII. Sadly, they all committed suicide and no one survived. So that means this cave is their grave site, so be respectful. Cache IS NOT hidden in the cave! It is ok to go near the cave, but it is forbidden to go inside the cave. DO NOT ENTER THE CAVE!

The way point for this cache is marked at the top of the stairs leading down to the cave. However, the cache is down the stairs in the area around the cave. The cache is a small plastic spray painted 100 yen container. Original contents are as follows:

Log book and pen
Ham radio GC
Bracelet
Madama Oyaji keitai charm
Talking Gundam keychain
Tokyo Disney toy

Please remember to be respectful of the area and do not enter the cave. Also, the stone to the left of the cave entrance has all the names of those who died in that cave during the battle of Okinawa.

Oh and I forgot to mention. Watch out for the "guardians" of the catch. The guardians are also know as huge freaking spiders!

One more thing! I just wanted to let everyone know to avoid this place at night. Due to the sensitive nature of this area I wouldn't want any Okinawans to see someone snooping around and night and call the police.
