Geocache Description:

St Mary the Virgin Church is situated at the above co-ordinates at Reading Street and has ample parking.

This church formerly stood on the island of Ebony, the hogsback you see on the right as you go down the road to Appledore. The old graveyard is still there clearly marked by the clump of trees on the rise as you look up from the road.

How the church came to be moved here, to Reading Street, in 1858 – a good mile from its old site – is explained in a note by the Rev. W W Kirby, Vicar of Appledore and Ebony 1856-62, which is framed on the north wall.

The web site (visit link) will give you all the background information on the church if you require it and the cache "Great English Views #2" is situated just a mile away where the church was originally situated.

We have launched this cache to commemorate the start of our second year of caching (an average of one cache a day in the first year, see if we can keep it up in the second).

The Tenterden Garden Centre, opposite, has excellent facilities should you need a 'cuppa' to warm you up and if you go on a Friday, say hello to the Dragon on the till!!

In respect of privacy, we have put the cache just outside the church land.
