Geocache Description:

Accessible off Thomas Lake Harris Drive. $5 starbuck card for FTF

When Fountaingrove was being developed 10-15 years ago I was confused by the street Thomas Lake Harris. I was told one group of homeowners wanted the nearby lake name Thomas Lake and another group wanted Lake Harris. They compromised on Thomas Lake Harris. Only a year ago did I read that Thomas Lake Harris was one of the first developers of Fountaingrove.

Thomas Lake Harris was an evangelist, poet, visionary, and (believe it or not) winemaker. He moved his congregation to Santa Rosa, and bought 400 acres and called it Fountain Grove. Kanaye Nagasawa came along for the ride.

The focal point of Fountain Grove was the winery which by 1880 was producing wine that had established an international reputation, the first California wine to do so. By 1890 he was producing 200,000 gallons per year.

Harris was sent packing when it was revealed he was having inappropriate relations with women among the congregation. Nagasawa took over winemaking operations becoming "the Japanese Baron of Fountaingrove".
