How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

A Geocaching-themed meetup coinciding with the local science fiction convention -- held in public area of the hotel.

The Arisia science fiction convention happens every year in the Boston area. One of this year's guests of honor is a cacher (your humble event host, that's me), and got a geocaching event into the official program book, listed as follows:

Sun 4PM (to 5PM) BoF (Birds of a Feather): Geocaching Do you enjoy the idea of using billions of dollars of military hardware (GPS satellites) for your own amusement (to find Tupperware hidden in the woods)? Learn about the game of Geocaching; meet some local geocachers; swap stories; move and discover trackables. Bring your tricor – er, GPS receiver, and any travel bugs/geocoins that you have in your inventory. With a little luck, we'll have this listed as an Event Cache, so this could be your first "find"!

So, there may be a bunch of people who show up because they're curious about geocaching. If you like the idea of being an ambassador for the local caching scene, this one's for you. As Arisia also brings fans from outside the area, expect to also meet cachers from further away. For instance, your host's home coordinates are more like N37° 52' W122° 16'. :-D (Yes, I will bring at least one coin that is native to my area.)

A few things to know:

You do not need to join the convention to attend this event. The event will be in a public space of the hotel.
If you're bringing kids, please make sure they are prepared to behave appropriately in a nice hotel. It's different from an event cache in a park... (I shudder to think how I would have run/yelled/climbed in this setting when I was five years old...)
We'll try to have a sign of some kind in the lobby to help you find where we'll be. As a fallback plan, cell phone number in the hints.
Yeah, we science fiction fans can be big nerds -- and some of us take particular pride in that. No nerd-bashing! (Remember that some people think of geocaching as a nerdy activity, in and of itself.) %-}
Parking in the hotel's lot is expensive, and may even be scarce -- you are encouraged to seek alternatives.
