This cache has been archived.

BEENTHERE309: Keystone's right. An illness in the family over this past summer has interrupted our regular trips up to Webster County. Will archive this one for now, maybe replace it in the future when things calm down a bit.

Geocache Description:

An ammo can with swag nearby one of Webster Spring's oldest tourist attractions, a high bluff overlooking the Elk River. As you can imagine, there is a rather formidable cliff nearby. NOT recommended for small kids!!!!

The following was adapted from The Mountaineer 1921 Yearbook at Webster Springs School:

LOVERS LEAP

There was a young Huron chief, named White Eagle, who fell in love with a pretty Coshocton princess named Winona, and her with him. There was peace between the two tribes then, but they didn't like each other, anyhow. White Eagle asked Winona's pa for her hand in marriage, but he said she would never marry a Huron. White Eagle, however, kept asking the chief until he told him if he ever caught him coming around Winona again he would scalp him alive. That didn't seem to sacre the young chief, because he kept sending word to Winona whenever he could. Finally, they decided to marry each other and live with the Hurons. White Feather slipped into te Coshocton village one night and found Winona waiting for him, all ready to go.

They had nearly gotten clear of the village when a dog started to howl. That roused everybody, of course, and they soon found out what was the matter. The old chief said he was going to keep is word about the scalping, and that excited the young warriors, who all wanted Winona for themselves. They took up the chase and soon were gaining on them fast, as Winona could not run like a warrior. They chased them all night, and just before daybreak, they cornered them on this very rock. White Eagle and Winona knew they were cornered and they thought he was sure to be killed and no telling what would be done to her. Chances are, the old chief was going to make her marry a Coshocton. Well, she wasn't going to do it, for when the warriors closed in on them at daybreak, they found nothing here but the bare rock. They found their bodies at the lower end of the river, locked in each other's arms - and both of them smiling.

The old chief later siad that he never meant what he said - that he just wanted to see if the young chap had any spunk - and naturally he took the news very bad. He never did get over it. Before long, lover's leap had a third victim.

Ocasionally, you will find an old postcard of this cliff, as it was a brief stroll from the old Webster Springs Hotel. For more information, you can refer to the book "The Webster Springs Hotel and Historic Springs, WV, The Summer Resort Center" by Mark Romano (2007)
