For years I've been told about a cemetery in McNaughton park. I
first heard of the cemetery during a junior high school trip in
1978. My friends said they saw the cemetery when riding horses out
in the park but unfortunatly could not relocate the cemetery. Years
have since gone by. Recently my nephew found the cemetery while
riding his mountain bike out in the park. He told his dad about it
and then he told me. My nephew Cachin' Bandit and myself decided to
look for the cemetery. What we found is intersting and here is my
story.
Today on 29 December 2007 I picked up my nephew Cachin' Bandit
and together we drove out to McNaughton Park to look for the old
Meyers Cemetery. On the way to McNaughton Park we saw a old man
walking along the road. I suggested that we stop and ask the old
man about the cemetery. I stopped the Jeep and my nephew started
with the questions about the Meyer Cemetery and asked the old man
if he knew where it was. The old man had a crazed look and said
"yes I know where it is, but its been years since I been out to
that old cemetery, why do you kids want to go out messing in a
place like that?"
He then said something I will never forget because of the
distant look in his eyes. This is what the old man said, "I
remember the day well. It was the Fall of 1943 when that Miller boy
went out to the old cemetery looking for his coon hound. I can
still hear the howling and that poor Miller boy screaming. I ran
all the way out there and all I could find was a bloody shirt and
the dogs leash. We never did find that Miller boy". After saying
that the old man just stared off into the distance.
For a moment I felt I was wasting my time. I then asked if he
could tell me how to get to the cemetery. He told me in half
riddles how to get there. He mentioned lookout hill, a large tree
standing alone, a hedge row, and said something about a old brick
house. I wrote most of what he said to me and my nephew. When I was
writting down the instructions I paused to look up and ask another
question. When I looked up the old man was gone! It was as if he
just vanished into thin air. I asked Cashin Bandit if he seen where
the old man went and he said no I did'nt see him leave. I got out
of my jeep and saw nothing, no footprints, nothing. Weird I
thought.
We continued on into the park to start our search. We looked for
what the old man mentioned, the hedge row, the lookout hill, the
brick house, and then before we knew it I saw a clearing with a
small cemetery. It was very old. When I walked into the cemetery
the wind picked up, and for a few moments I thought I heard howling
of some sort followed by a faint scream. I'm not sure if this is
what I really heard but it sure did sound spooky and about scared
me out of my wits.
We stayed at the cemetery for short while. I counted 12 people
buried here. The graves are old and its surrounded with an antique
iron fence.
I would never come out here at night, not even on a bet.
I wonder what ever happened to that Miller boy.
