This is a small cache and should be an easy find that can store small swaps and trackables. All you need to do is look next to a rock under a small tree. There are some stones that have been placed around other young saplings. Please do not disturb them.
The chimney on Pensioners Hill was built around 1915 and stood as a landmark at the foot of Blackjack Mountain for the rest of the century.
The chimney had been built to give draft to a new Lancashire type boiler installed at the new Blackjack Mine in 1914. The boiler was used to power the haulage of coal out of the mine.
Gunnedah’s landmark had to be demolished following the closure of the historic mine which had been originally established in the 1880’s. The 30 metre chimney posed a safety problem and was brought down using a shot charge in 2001.
Approximately 10,000 bricks were recovered from the chimney in order to provide the Heritage Wall and entrance gates to Pensioners Hill Reserve.
The demolition and construction was undertaken during 2001 by members of the Gunnedah West Rotary Club and was sponsored by Namoi Mining.
This is a nice little spot where you can enjoy some great views of Gunnedah.
Happy cahing :)
