A few interesting facts about the Patuxent River. It is a
tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. It is the longest River to be
located entirely in the State of Maryland. Additionally it was
first named "Pawtuxunt" by Jamestown settler John Smith who
explored it in 1608.
The name of this cache comes from the fact that here the
Patuxent River, well it doesn't really resemble a river, in fact it
rather resembles a measly little stream. But it's a fun place to
play nonetheless.
Scrubs Mom grew up pretty much just up the hill from Fern City
another cache on the way to this one. This cache is in a beautiful
State Park with numerous recreational options hunting, fishing,
hiking, horseback riding and biking. Because hunting is available
here use caution, wear blaze orange or don't look for this cache
during hunting season. However there is no hunting on Sunday's so
you should be safe going caching then. The hike in is 0.77 miles
from parking as the crow flies, it took us about 40 minutes to hike
it. Including time spent hunting for a good cache location. However
the trails are not clearly defined nor is the terrain what one
would consider flat. The trail is a fun one to hike as you follow
the path of the river, moving from a hardwood forest, to open
meadows at times and ending near an evergreen forest at the cache
location. There are plenty of places to stop and play in the water
along the trail and you will notice many interesting rock
formations particularly around Fern City and on the other side of
the river as you hike in. This cache is meant to be kid friendly
even though the hike in isn't the easiest it's not overwhelming
either. The cache is a clearly labeled plastic lock and lock
container. It is well stocked with a few grown up friendly trading
items and quite a few kid friendly items. The hide is not hard here
because the real enjoyment is the hike.
Please replace the cache exactly as found and use similar hiding
materials so it is not easily discovered by others, but is easily
found by other cachers.
