Geocache Description:

Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church on top of Macedonia Hill in Burlington, Ohio. You are looking for a CLEAR 2 QUART CONTAINER with a screw top about the size of a cookie jar. This is my first hide, so let me know what you think.

Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church was built in 1849 on Macedonia Ridge north of Burlington an Abolitionist Sanctuary for escaped and freed slaves since 1799.It was built by 37 freed slaves who arrived from Virginia after being set free by James Twyman. This church was the religious and social focal point of the black community and became the mother church for approximately eight Baptist churches that exist in Ohio and West Virginia.
A nearby cache called “Burlington 37” in the cemetery where the freed slaves are buried. Another nearby cache, the “Old County Seat Cache” is at one of two stone jails in the state of Ohio that were built prior to the Civil War.
At the time this church was part of the Underground Railroad, it was accessed by trails that lead up the hill from Charlie Creek, Solida Road, and Burlington. As years passed, trails became wider as horses and wagons traveled over them and they were used as roads. Later, the roads were paved for automobile use.
As you approach this cache, notice the way the “trail” runs through the woods and imagine what it would have looked like in the 1800's. Imagine trying to find the church in the dead of night with no street lights, with the very real threat that you will be captured, beaten, chained, and returned to slavery. As you are around the church, imagine the delight the runaway slaves felt when the first saw the church.
An old cemetery 3/10 of a mile from the church contains tombstones from the 1800’s.
TWO DOGS AT A NEARBY HOUSE BARK A LOT. I AM UNSURE IF THEY ROAM THE CHURCH LOT OR STAY AT HOME AND I AM UNSURE OF THEIR FRIENDLINESS. USE CAUTION !!! Beware of muggles at the house and passing by on the road. This church is often a target of Vandals, if you see any damage to this church please report it to the police.
You are looking for a CLEAR 2 QUART CONTAINER with a screw top about the size of a cookie jar. Inside you will find a log book and several trade items. Please trade equally.
