Geocache Description:

This cache was placed as part of the Neighbour of Leap Year's day Bash Event. The cache is a small container, hidden close to Baviaanspoort Water Treatment Works. The coordinates given are not the final coordinates to the cache.

Baviaanspoort View

Stinky is a cache located near the Baviaanspoort Water Treatment Works. From the coordinates given, there is a beautiful view over the entire Baviaanspoort area. When facing the Water Treatment Works one can see the Baviaanspoort Prison, located on top of a distant hill just a little to the left of the Water Treatment Works. A little bit below the prison, to the right, one can see the residential area inhabited by prison wardens and people involved with the running of the Baviaanspoort prison. The inmates, however are safely locked away in the prison on the hill.

Regarding the Water Treatment Works:
The Roodeplaat dam supplies the Northern areas of Tshwane with water through the Montana, Wonderboom and Magaliesberg reservoirs and act as direct supply to the Doornpoort area. It currently has the capacity of 40 million m³, of which 50% originates from return flows from the Baviaanspoort and Zeekoegat waste water treatment works.

Sewage treatment:
Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, both runoff and domestic. It includes physical, chemical and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce a waste stream and a solid waste or sludge suitable for discharge or reuse back into the environment. This material is often inadvertently contaminated with many toxic organic and inorganic compounds.

Typically, sewage treatment involves three stages, called primary, secondary and tertiary treatment. First, the solids are separated from the wastewater stream. Then dissolved biological matter is progressively converted into a solid mass by using indigenous, water-borne microorganisms. Finally, the biological solids are neutralized then disposed of or re-used, and the treated water may be disinfected chemically or physically. The final effluent can be discharged into a stream, river, bay, lagoon or wetland, or it can be used for the irrigation of a golf course, green way or park. If it is sufficiently clean, it can also be used for groundwater recharge. In the case of the Tshwane water supplying scheme, it is pumped back into the Roodeplaat dam.

How to find the cache:

1. Go to the given coordinates.
2. Face the Water Treatment Works.
3. Look down to your right; there is a bush growing between some split rocks, some 10m – 13m from your current location.
4. Walk 7m straight towards the bush and start your search.
5. Good Luck!
