The Watering Hole
For over 21 years, this has
indeed been a watering hole for me.
`Tis dry at
last so come here no more looking for water.
Come now for the
cache!!
Logistics:
Located along a
popular mountain trail system...
The Watering Hole
is best reached by one of two trailheads:
1) The
closest route by far is to park at N41.20691 W111.83549 on the new
Snowbasin Road. The trail crosses the road here but you start
on the same side that the parking is on. The cache is .43
miles along the trail which takes about 11 minutes in one direction
moving at 2mph. Just short of halfway, at the signed trail
split you'll stay left/straight.

Wheeler's the way
to go!
2) If you’re
really up for more than just a short hike, option two has you
entering the trail from the old Snowbasin road at N41.22254
W111.83785 at another parking pullout. This time, the
trailhead is across the road from the parking and the rough
distance from there to the cache is 1.11 miles. My wife and I
covered this distance on snowshoes in 27 minutes at 2.4mph, one
way.
Wintertime:
The trail will
typically be restricted allowing only cross country skiers and
snowshoers. The trail isn’t groomed so if on skis, you’d best
be well experienced. Also in the winter the long route gets
much longer because the old Snowbasin road is partially closed off
for groomed XC skiing and snowshoeing. It’s still doable by
those truly in shape and looking for a good workout. You’d
park further down the old road close to N41.233355 W111.820908 and
be looking at about 5 miles round trip. Of course you could
come up with a couple of 10+ mile options too. During snow
season I would strongly recommend carrying a little snow
shovel like backcountry skiers use. The cache will be buried
by snow and will need to be covered with snow to remain well hidden
from trail users. This is quickly done with such a shovel.
Please keep the cache hidden well since it’s so close to the
trail. There is something of a visible hint leading up from
the cache, as long as the snow level isn’t over several feet
high.
Final
note:
This fun cache
will take a few extra (easy) steps to get into and to close.
It’s bigger than a decon container and smaller than a small ammo
can.
