Geocache Description:

Above position will take you to the entrance (gate) of the former sugar mill Marienburg. Entrance to the premises is free. Taking a guided tour is optional. These however provide for some much needed income for former employees. Unemployment is very high in this area.

Already in the second half of the seventeenth century many plantations were established along the Upper Commewijne and the Cottica River were predominantly sugar, coffee and cocoa were cultivated. A number of factors caused these plantations to gradually deteriorate through the centuries. In 1882, the Dutch Trade Company built a big and new Central Sugar Factory at Mariënburg. This factory played an important role during a very long time in the development of the district. A few years ago, the factory was closed however, and all company buildings were dismantled. With this, the existence of the last sugar processing company in Suriname had come to an end. On the right bank of the Commewijne river, there are a few plantations which were still active after the second world war but which are now no longer in use.

On July 30th ABCD (each letter is equal to an individual numbers of the year) a detachment of the colonial army executed AE (= doodgeschoten) people during a employee's rising on the former sugar plantation Mariënburg. Later AB (= andere verzetsstrijders) other victems died because of their injuries. One has been unable to locate their graves untill today. On sunday Juli 30th DCCE, exactly 104 years later, on the same spot, a monument was erected in memorance to this bloody confrontation.

In above alinea the capital letters have to be substituted with numbers. These can be found on the object depicted on the left. The cache is calculated in position:
N 05°52.((2 x ABC) - AE + A + D)´
W055°02.(BDE - D - E)´

Please be very carefull when retrieving the cache. WATCH OUT FOR THE BIG BROWN WASPS(MARBONZOES), THEIR STING CAN BE VERY PAINFULL! At the time of placing the cache there were lots of them around.

A word of caution!
Guided tours are being offered by former employees of the sugar factory. These tours will usually take you through some parts of the former factory of which the roof is covered with loose corrugated iron sheets. The chance of these sheets (and other stuff) coming down in windy conditions is high. Clearly a very dangerous situation!!!
When accepting  such a tour, one should at least wear a hard-topped hat.

Note 1: I visit Suriname very regularly, almost once every three months for a week or two. Local arrangements have been made in case maintenance of the cache is needed on short notice.

Note 2: Although the cache is a small round plastic container it still contains a logbook, a pencil and a goodie. It may also contain small TB or GeoCoin.
