INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #594

"Bethesda Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the New Bethesda Cemetery in Monroe Township of Morgan County. The cemetery grounds are obviously well cared for, but many of the older headstones are in dire need of care. Many have fallen over and some are broke into pieces. A large number need a good cleaning and are difficult to read. Still, this is a very pleasant country cemetery and is worth exploring.

The Farmers Come to Indiana

Somewhere between 1830-1850 two brothers, Peter and Henry Farmer, moved from North Carolina to Indiana. They both brought large families with them. They acquired land in Morgan County and set up shop as farmers.

Civil War Veteran and Casualty

Jacob Farmer was the son of Henry Famer. He and cousin Peter Farmer enlisted for the Civil War and became members of company D of the 70th Indiana Infantry. The 70th Indiana was under the command of Colonel Benjamin Harrison, who would later go on to become the 23rd President of the United States. The 70th started off guarding railroad bridges and performing other duties in Kentucky. This relatively quite duty would end as they joined Sherman's drive towards Atlanta. The 70th participated in many battles in Georgia, including the Battle of Resaca. This battle occurred from May 13-15 of 1864. The confederates had taken up positions in the hills around Resaca, and the Union troops were asked to assault the Southern positions. Unable to break through the Confederate defenses, General Sherman ordered troops around the Confederate flank, threatening their railroad supply lines. This caused the Confederates to fall back to positions further south. Peter and Jacob Farmer were both wounded in the Battle of Resaca. Peter was wounded on May 15, 1864. He would recover from his wounds and was discharged from service. Jacob was wounded on May 14th. He was moved to a hospital in Nashville Tennessee, but would succumb to his wounds on June 9, 1864.

Unfortunately, Jacob Farmer's headstone has broken off near the ground and needs to be repaired.

Another Civil War Veteran

John Griggs was a member of the 21st Indiana Infantry Regiment. This unit was also known as the 'Jackass Regiment' because their heavy guns were drawn by mules. The units designation was changed to the Indiana 1st Heavy Artillery in 1863. Shortly after the regiment was formed they were sent to Baltimore, but would spend much of the war in Louisiana or Texas. In fact they were one of the first units to enter New Orleans with General Butler and would participate in the Battles of Baton Rouge and Port Hudson.
