Geocache Description:

A drive by.

We noticed this on our way to the Tyne Confluence Cache and stopped to take a look. There are no markings and intrigue took us back home to the internet to confirm what it was. Since it lies near the path of the Stanegate on the west bank of the River North Tyne we wondered if it had a Roman connection. Not so, this wayside cross at Warden is one of many wayside crosses, probably medieval (1066-1540), which were placed by roads or paths to mark the way for travellers in wild areas - no Tarmac roads and detailed signposts in those days - so a welcome sight no doubt when traversing the countryside. This wayside cross is a Scheduled Monument protected by law - we left a micro nearby but away from the monument.

We found a 2 Euro Eire coin atop the remains - a good omen since we've just started planning a trip to Ireland - we took that and left three 1p coins. There are some funny old superstitions with coins - we've found and left them embedded in fallen trees, cairns, in a little box we found when setting out our Pictionary cache {with a note that promised us good luck if we took one} and of course we've thrown them down wells and into fountains - hmmmm.... just always remember if you pick up a coin on the heads up it will bring you GOOD luck but if you pick up a coin on tails up it will bring you BAD luck ! and of course always turn over a silver coin in your pocket when you see a full moon. That's a few off the cuff, any more?
