You can access the cache on foot, by bike or even by horse! If on
foot, park at N55 58.369 W002 51.238, which is signposted from the
B1377 as a Railway Walk, or park in Longniddry at the end of the
railway path. There is a grand view of the castle from the path.
You may wish to drive round to Redhouse market Garden and have a
closer look at the castle. It is quite impressive!
The first long oblong plan tower wwas built around 1600 by John
Laing, the Keeper of the Signet. It's possible that he rubble from
Longniddry castle was used, because its owner 'Hugh Douglas of
Londniddry' had sided with the English during the wars of the
'Rough Wooing'. A lectern type Doo'cot was added. Several gun-loops
were built into a long low set outerwall.
After the 1746 Jacobite rebellion the Hamiltons forfeited the
estate of Redhouse and the castle fell into decay. But unlike other
castles in the Lothians it didn't become the local quarry and has
remained surprisingly intact, since all that is missing is the roof
and floors and the lean-to buildings in the courtyard.
A reconstruction of the castle and further information can be
found here.
