The Murder of Sheriff Kemp
May, 1910
A true story. In May of 1910, two young men "borrowed" a saddle from Ed Sailor of Upper Lake. More crimes followed. They stole two horses, apparently having decided to become "outlaws." Taking off at night into Bachelor Valley, one riding bareback, they made their way south into Scott's Valley. Stealing another saddle and bridle in the valley they continued on to the Poe house where they also stole a 38-56 rifle and a shotgun. They headed to the thicket about 1/2 mile west of the Eickhoff ranch where they made camp, letting their horses free to graze.
On the morning of May 5th, Sheriff George W. Kemp was receiving reports of the crimes in the Valley and one farmer had reported seeing two people and horses up Scotts Creek. Sheriff Kemp took two young men with him in his 1907 2 cylinder Reo touring car up Scotts Valley. They scouted and located the horses near the Eickhoff Ranch. Not knowing that the men were armed, the Sheriff and his men hid until dusk, awaiting the return of the outlaws. When they showed, Sheriff Kemp, pistol in hand, demanded that they throw up their hands as they were under arrest. One of them raised the 38-56 rifle and shot Sheriff Kemp in the chest. Kemp exclaimed, "Oh my God boys I am shot" as he slumped to the ground. The two outlaws crashed out of sight as one of the young men gave chase and fired once . . .
Want the rest of the history? Find the cache! <------someone took the "rest of the story" and I can't find my original write up. But what happened was that volunteer posses went out and found where they were hiding in thick brush. They set fire to the brush and drove them out and arrested them. On January 24, 1910 Louis Augustine was sentenced to death by hanging at San Quentin which was to be carried out on September 16. The accomplice, Andy Moore, was sentenced to 25 years.
You will be very near both the Eickhoff ranch and in a little cul-de-sac that, who knows, might have even been where the outlaws had holed up!
