The Monkey Puzzle is the hardiest species of tree in the softwood family in South America. It is native to central Chile and west-central Argentina. It is an evergreen tree growing to 120 feet tall and 6 feet in trunk diameter. Because of the species' great age it is sometimes described as a living fossil. Monkey Puzzle is the national tree of Chile.
The origin of the popular English name Monkey Puzzle derives from its early cultivation in Britain in about 1850, when the species was still very rare in gardens and not widely known. The proud owner of a young specimen in Britain was showing it to a group of friends, and one made the remark "It would puzzle a monkey to climb that tree"; as the species had no existing popular name, it stuck.
There are other definitions of Monkey Puzzle... as you will soon discover! I was not sure how difficult to rate this one... if it spanks you let me know and I will up the rating. Please DO NOT put trade items in the cache container! When there is snow on the ground, be very careful not to lose the object of your desire!!
