Geocache Description:

Can be done as a fairly short quick walk or as part of a longer walk along the Wysis Way.

The battle of Barbers Bridge took place on 24 March 1643, although it was evidently more a skirmish than a ‘battle’! The bridge in the name of the battle wasn’t actually even built during the time of the event. The battle was between Sir William Waller and Welshman Lord Herbert and their forces.

Various cannon balls and skeletons have been found in and around the area, including under the floor of St. Mary’s church.

Although there have been various theories as to what exactly happened, it will probably never be known. The well known memorial was erected in 1871, building from stone of the walls of the city the men had looked upon, but couldn’t capture.

“These stones, taken from the ancient walls of the city of Gloucester, mark the burial place of the Welsh Lord Herberts force who fell in the combined attack by Sir William Waller and Colonel Massey on their entrenchments at Highnam, March 24 1643.”

The cache is just along from Barbers Bridge, on the former railway line. (If you cross the B4215 you can see what was the old station and station masters house. The last trains ran on 30 May 1964!) It is on the Wysis Way and from its’ location you can just see the bell in the tower of St.Mary’s church, Rudford.

There is a very short scramble up a side bank to retrieve the cache.

The cache is a small tupperware box which is in a green drawstring bag and will hold small trade items / TBs / coins.

Well done ayepee for FTF!!
