Geocache Description:

Old Fort Hill

Old Fort Hill road was one of the earliest approaches to the North Saskatchewan river. It may have originated at the turn of the nineteenth century when Aboriginal people traveled to the south bank of the North Saskatchewan to cross the river and trade at Fort Edmonton. In 1875, John Walter built a house directly across the river from where Fort Edmonton stood. This road ran through his property and led to the ferry he operated, transporting passengers and cargo across the river.

Old Fort Hill is now used as access to a Parks and Recreation storage facility and is marked as one-way except for city maintenance vehicles. This doesn't seem to stop some residents looking for a shortcut into the river valley though. Following the road down the hill will take you under Saskatchewan Drive and you'll pop out on Walterdale Hill, just above the Kinsmen Sports Centre. I would advise that you adhere to traffic laws and only go on foot or by bicycle. Make sure to take in the view of the Alberta Legislature (the old site of Fort Edmonton!).

The container is a 600mL Lock&Lock in a nice cozy winter-friendly hide. It's NOT in a spruce tree and NOT on the electrical box! I unfortunately couldn't stuff the cache with beaver pelts, Hudson Bay blankets, and whiskey so you'll have to settle for the regular fare (sorry!). Please take care when retrieving and replacing the cache and watch those fingers!
