Long Island City Famous Almost Landmark Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Tatanka49: It had a good run but too difficult to maintain. It's also now in a state park so permits required.

Geocache Description:

A quick cache with another magnificent view of the East River...and a famous almost landmark.

This cache is in the new Queens West Community. I didn't even know that the street that it's on existed until today. New York City and its former owner really wanted to save this landmark, so amongst brand new buildings, a small plot of land is maintained for this object.

When the owner moved from Hunters Point in 1999, the object was too large to move. The object is still there and although the owner is no longer in the city, the object is still maintained by its previous owner on its own 60-by-200-foot plot.

Although it is not an official landmark, the Landmarks Preservation Commission has kept an eye on it since 1988, when it was considered for designation. The commission chairman called it ''an iconic part of our cityscape.''

This cache is a film canister located near a spot where you can sit and get a magnificent view of the object and the skyline beyond. Don't beleive everything you see on Google Earth. If you are in the dirt, you are in the wrong place. Why would I want you to get dirty in such a brand new place?

Note: Some cachers have been asked to leave at "closing time" I didn't know there WAS a closing time and it's not posted. So my best advice is to visit between sunup and dusk. The only info I could find on hours on the web is that they are open 365 days a year. No info is given for hours.
