Take a walk back in time. Parking nearby at N 33 05.636/W 117 12.265 (and more as well beyond this one).
I was walking along with my geo-dog through a new area. Ahhh, birds chirping, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, green grass and wildflowers peeking out between the rocks and bushes, and the babbling brook with actual flowing water – sounds that I haven’t heard often since I left the East Coast. It made me wonder how things must have been before the houses and highways tore through the landscape. What would life have been like as a California teenager in the 60’s?
I can imagine riding along in my car, cruising with my date, looking for a nice place to picnic (among other things…) Suddenly, OH NO, must be a 60’s flashback...what’s happening? Must be an electrochemical process that’s taking place. I can see the transfer of electrons from iron to oxygen (darn I must be taking too many of those iron pills). It’s accelerating because of the water and accelerated by electrolytes...oh my, oh my, the reaction I’m experiencing, it's the reduction of oxygen: O2 + 4 e- + 2 H2O --> 4 OH- I can't breathe! The electrons are coming from the oxidation process of the iron, darn those vitamins! Fe --> Fe2+ + 2 e- And all that water…it’s causing 2 Fe2+ + 0.5 O2 --> 2 Fe3+ + O2-
Wait a minute. That was 40 or so years ago. All that’s left now are the fond memories. Time marches on but will relentlessly continue this reaction until long after I’m gone!
