Geocache Description:

Welcome to the dueller's cache. This cache is not your typical quick smiley. It is intended to be a sort of tour guide for Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah Georgia. As you go through the stages, please take your time and enjoy this remarkable place.

First a little background information...

Colonial Park Cemetery is located at the corner of Abercorn and Oglethorpe. Also known as the old burying ground, was Savannah's main cemetary from 1750 to 1853. More or less anybody who died in Savannah during that time was buried here. Although there are only about 600 markers, over 10,000 people are buried here. Keep that in mind when you walk around this place.
This place has many colorful stories to tell. It is the home of several hauntings. During the Civil War, Sherman's troops made their encampment inside the cemetery. They used the headstones for target practise, destroying many. they also defaced several markers, changing the dates or the letters on the stones. See if you can spot some of this early graffitti.
The people resting here all played a part in making Savannah what it is today, a vibrant, historic, cosmopolitan city, beautiful and proud, a true treasure!

---------On to the cache!!!----------

-----------STAGE 1-----------

Our first stop on this tour is probably the most famous person in residence here. His name is Button Gwinnett, one of the signers of the Declaration of Indepenence. he died in a duel with General Lachlan McIntosh. he was shot in the leg and suffered for three days before dying. Mr McIntosh is also buried in Colonal Park.
Use the plaque on Mr Gwinnett's monument to figure out his age, call your answer A. Do the math below to get your next coordinates.

A+302=BBB

32.04.AAA
081.05.BBB

---------STAGE 2----------

Next we will pay a visit to Mrs Grace Belcher. Her headstone is made of slate and has stood the test of time well. Notice how the s is shaped like an f. She died in the late 1700's at the age of 45. Her 4 year old son died only five weeks later. Things were indeed tough back then. Take the year in which she died and call it B. Then do the math.

B-1302=CCC
B-1448=DDD

32.04.CCC
081.05.DDD

---------STAGE 3---------

On we go. This area is called "the wall." This is where all the markers go that nobody knows where their proper location is. The wall used to go around the entire cemetery, but this is all that is left. The rest of it having been torn down over a century ago.
find John Eagerty's headstone and see how old he was at the time of his demise. call your answer C.

C+406=FFF

32.04.EEE
081.05.FFF

--------STAGE 4----------

this is the Le Moine family vault. The good reverend is not actually in there, but rests a little south of here in the "catholic sector" of Colonial Park. The Cathedral of John the Baptist is one block south of the cemetery, look that way, you can't miss it. The cathedral has been called "awesome" and "spectacular," it truly is! If you only see one thing in Savannah, go see the cathedral. note the similarity in names between the cathedral and the reverend, interesting.take the year the reverend died and call your answer D.

D-1278=GGG
D-1403=HHH

32.04.GGG
081.05.HHH

---------STAGE 5----------

My life is like the summer rose
That opens to the morning sky;
But ere the shades of evening close
Is scattered on the ground- to die.

Lieutenant James Wilde died defending his honor in a duel with Captain Roswell P. Johnson. What a way to settle an arguement! And they called duelling "civillized." this is one of the most visited graves in the park. What regiment were they assigned to? call your answer E.

E times 50 plus 61 = III
E times 50 minus 29 = JJJ

32.04.III
081.05.JJJ

---------STAGE 6---------

The best way to get to the final is to leave by the south gate. You will find a nice playground. This was the old duelling grounds. Notice how it is a long skinny piece of land. Duelling was legal, but you had to buy a permit and conduct your business only here. How convenient to put it next to the cemetery. Duelling lasted from 1740 to 1877! and now we play where once they fought and died! The final is located only a couple blocks away.
I hope you have enjoyed the tour. Colonial Park is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm. Besides you really wouldnt want to go in there after dark, serious!
The cache container is accessible at all times. There is always muggles present so be cautious when retrieving the cache. Inside is a pen and an unactivated geocoin for ftf. good luck

**************** owners edit 11/27/11 **************

this cache has been down for some time because of a "landscaping remodel" at the final's location. we have moved the final to a new location and adjusted the listing accordingly.
the container has sat in its new location for a month without being discovered, so now it is time to release it.
originally the final was supposed to go here but we had to choose another space beacause it was too close to a different cache. now, 3 years later, that cache is gone and our cache can be as it was originally intended to be!!!
since it is a new spot, all previous finders are welcome to find and log this one again!!
